What is Unicode italic?

Unicode italic is a set of mathematical alphanumeric symbols that look like italic versions of regular letters. These characters are part of the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block in the Unicode standard and are rendered as italic by every modern font, browser, and operating system. Because they are real Unicode code points (not formatting), they can be pasted into any text field that does not support rich text formatting — including social media bios, post captions, usernames, and chat messages.

Italic text variants

There are several italic variants in Unicode. The most commonly used is Mathematical Italic (U+1D434–U+1D467), which covers A–Z and a–z. Note that the mathematical italic h is actually a separate precomposed character (U+210E, PLANCK CONSTANT) for historical reasons. Other variants include Mathematical Bold Italic, Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic, and Mathematical Sans-Serif Bold Italic. This tool uses the standard Mathematical Italic variant.

When to use italic text

Unicode italic text is useful whenever you need italic styling in a plain-text environment:

• Social media bios and captions. Add emphasis or a stylistic touch to an Instagram bio or a tweet.
• Usernames and display names. Style a Discord or gaming username with italic flair.
• Chat messages. Quote a book title or foreign word in WhatsApp, Telegram, or Slack.
• Plain-text documents. Mark titles, emphasis, or foreign words in plain-text notes.
• Headlines and titles. Create italic headlines in platforms that strip HTML formatting.

Italic text on the web

Most social media platforms strip HTML and markdown formatting from posts, bios, and comments. Unicode italic bypasses this limitation because the italic styling is baked into the character itself — the platform sees a different code point, not a formatting instruction. This means your italic text will appear italic on Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, TikTok, Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, and most other platforms. Note that screen readers may read the mathematical symbols aloud differently from regular letters.
